The newly completed Sewa Ground Market in Freetown has reached 100 per cent occupancy ahead of its official opening on September 1, 2026, following a 50 per cent reduction in rental prices.
The development was confirmed by Lansana Koroma, Managing Director of Sierra Estate Management Company Limited (SEMCO), who said the reduction in rental fees has attracted strong interest from traders seeking spaces at the newly completed facility.
Koroma said demand for stalls remains high, with traders moving quickly to secure available spaces.
“Trading will start at the Sewa Ground Market on the 1st of September,” he said.
The market is expected to provide traders with a more organised and structured environment while supporting efforts to reduce street trading and ease congestion in Freetown.
The 50 per cent reduction in rental prices followed a statement by President Julius Maada Bio, making the market more accessible to traders who may have previously been unable to afford the original rental rates.
The Sewa Ground Market project has a long history, having been initiated under the government of former President Ernest Bai Koroma. The project went through several phases of construction and demolition before eventually being completed under the administration of President Bio.
With the facility now fully booked, attention is turning to its official opening and the relocation of traders into the new market space.
Authorities hope the opening will help improve the organisation of commercial activities in the capital, reduce the number of traders operating on streets and contribute to efforts to address traffic congestion in busy areas of Freetown.
