Dr. Mustapha Kabba officially assumed office on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as Sierra Leone’s new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of Health, pledging to strengthen patient-centred care, teamwork and accountability across the country’s health sector.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Kabba outlined a compassionate and collaborative approach to leading the nation’s healthcare system, with a particular focus on meeting the needs of patients and vulnerable populations.
“Patients remain at the heart of our mission. They must be seen, heard, and cared for with compassion,” Dr. Kabba said as he formally took office.
The new CMO expressed gratitude to President Julius Maada Bio, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby and the wider leadership of the Ministry for the confidence placed in him. He also thanked doctors, nurses and other health workers across the country for their trust and continued service.
Dr. Kabba pledged to work closely with the Ministry’s leadership and other stakeholders to advance national health priorities. He specifically committed to supporting Minister Demby’s strategic vision for transforming healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone.
He identified improved healthcare services and outcomes for women and children as key priorities under his leadership, while emphasizing the need for stronger coordination across the health sector.
Beyond clinical services, Dr. Kabba called for greater unity, collaboration and shared responsibility among health sector stakeholders.
“We must work together as a team, not as individuals,” he emphasized. “When we succeed together, we all share the glory.”
Addressing the operational culture within the Ministry, the CMO urged healthcare leaders and workers to move away from a culture of blame and instead take ownership of their responsibilities.
He stressed that greater accountability and teamwork would be essential to ensuring consistent and effective healthcare delivery across all districts.
Dr. Kabba also paid tribute to his predecessor, acknowledging his contributions to Sierra Leone’s health system. He pledged to build on the foundation left behind and work towards further strengthening the country’s medical infrastructure and healthcare services.
His assumption of office marks the beginning of a new phase of leadership within the Ministry of Health, with patient-centred care, teamwork and improved health outcomes forming key elements of his stated priorities.
