The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has commended the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly President Julius Maada Bio, for facilitating the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to the country.
In a statement issued on September 6, 2026, the ECOWAS Commission described the development as an important step towards advancing national reconciliation, unity, and lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
The Commission’s commendation follows the Government’s decision to discontinue the charges against former President Koroma, which paved the way for his return to Sierra Leone after spending time outside the country.
ECOWAS also expressed appreciation to regional leaders, particularly Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his leadership and support in hosting former President Koroma and facilitating his safe return to Sierra Leone.
The regional bloc said it remains committed to working closely with the Government and people of Sierra Leone, as well as international partners, to support efforts aimed at consolidating peace, stability, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
The return of former President Koroma comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen political dialogue and national cohesion in Sierra Leone, with stakeholders continuing to emphasize the importance of reconciliation and peaceful democratic engagement.
ECOWAS said it will continue to support Sierra Leone’s efforts to promote peace, stability, and democratic governance as part of its broader regional integration and development agenda.
