The Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr announced significant progress in the development of the Freetown Cable Car system during a recent update on the project.

Initiated in July 2022, the two-year feasibility studies for the Freetown Cable Car system are well underway, funded by the C40cities Finance Facility. Overseen by an international consortium of experts led by GIZ, the studies aim to assess the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of implementing the cable car system in the city.

Yesterday, preliminary results of the feasibility studies were presented to the Project Steering Committee by Nirmish Pal of GFA and Samuella Faulkner of Integems, shedding light on the project’s viability.

The inaugural Freetown Cable Car Steering Committee meeting saw the participation of notable figures including Deputy Minister of Local Government Hon Alfred Moi Jamiru and senior representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Transport, and Lands. The constructive meeting marked the beginning of monthly gatherings aimed at steering the project forward.

Today, members of the Project Coordination Unit, comprising entities such as SLRA, PPP Unit, Ministry of Works, and Ministry of Economic Development, are engaged in technical discussions following site visits earlier this week.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr highlighted the feasibility studies’ positive findings, confirming the technical and financial viability of the Cable Car system. She also emphasized the city’s commitment to further engage potential private sector partners and grant funders to advance the project.
