Ambassador Michele Maria Valenti has praised President Julius Maada Bio for his decision to facilitate the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to Sierra Leone, describing it as an important step towards national reconciliation, unity and peace.
Former President Koroma returned to Sierra Leone on September 6, 2026, after more than two years abroad and was received by President Bio at State House the following day.
The development followed diplomatic engagements involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Nigerian President and former African Union Chairperson Olusegun Obasanjo, who accompanied Koroma to Freetown alongside Nigeria’s Foreign Minister.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) subsequently welcomed Koroma’s return and commended the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly President Bio, for the decision.
Valenti, who serves as a Special Envoy with responsibilities covering international relations, trade and investment, highlighted the significance of the decision and the leadership required to prioritise Sierra Leone’s national interests over political differences.
With his engagements spanning Africa–Europe relations, trade, investment and regional diplomacy, Valenti has positioned himself as an advocate for stronger partnerships between African countries and international partners. His work has also included engagements around ECOWAS and efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic cooperation between Africa and Europe.
In Sierra Leone, Valenti has also been involved in humanitarian and development-related initiatives, while his broader public engagements have focused on strengthening economic partnerships and supporting development priorities across Africa.
According to Valenti, Koroma’s return demonstrates the importance of placing national interest, reconciliation and stability above political divisions.
The diplomatic process surrounding Koroma’s return involved discreet engagements over several months, with Valenti identified as one of the interlocutors who maintained communication between the relevant parties.
Former President Koroma also acknowledged President Bio’s role, saying the President made a choice that placed Sierra Leone ahead of political divisions.
The return of the former President has significance beyond Sierra Leone, particularly given Nigeria’s direct involvement and the participation of former Nigerian leaders.
The development has further highlighted the importance of regional diplomacy, political dialogue and trusted diplomatic channels in promoting peace, stability and reconciliation in West Africa.
