Senior All People’s Congress (APC) member Alfred Minkailu Koroma has called on the party to actively involve Dr Samura Kamara in its preparations for the 2028 general elections, arguing that his participation could strengthen the opposition party’s chances of securing victory.
Koroma made the call during an appearance on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone programme, where he stressed the need for dialogue and unity within the APC as the party looks ahead to the next presidential election.
“If APC wants to record that victory that is much required, he (Samura Kamara) has to be brought to the table,” Koroma stated.
He said bringing Kamara into discussions would be important to the party’s efforts to build unity and position itself for the 2028 electoral contest.
Koroma also disputed claims that former President Ernest Bai Koroma unilaterally selected Dr Samura Kamara as the APC’s presidential flagbearer in previous elections.
According to him, the selection process involved the party’s 28 flagbearer aspirants at the time, together with members of the National Advisory Committee.
Koroma said the group deliberated before giving Ernest Bai Koroma the mandate to make the final selection.
“Ernest Bai Koroma did not select Dr Samura Kamara unilaterally. All of the 28 flagbearer aspirants who aspired at the time to become flagbearer, and members of the National Advisory Committee, were called into a room. They deliberated on the decision to be made, and gave Ernest Koroma the will to select,” he said.
His comments come as discussions continue within the APC over the party’s leadership, unity and strategy ahead of the 2028 elections.
Dr Samura Kamara, who represented the APC in the 2018 and 2023 presidential elections, has previously said that he is not currently focused on the 2028 elections because of unresolved concerns arising from the 2023 polls.
In a national address on May 7, 2026, Kamara stated:
“I am not, and I repeat, I am not on a 2028 elections agenda while 2023 remains unresolved. The will of the people is paramount.”
Kamara has described his reduced public presence as a deliberate decision made at “great personal cost” but has rejected suggestions that he has abandoned his political base.
He has continued to call for electoral justice and has argued that addressing what he describes as the “electoral flaws of 2023” is necessary for credible future elections.
Koroma’s appeal adds to wider discussions within the APC about how the party should manage its internal relationships and prepare for the next national election.
Other APC figures have also previously called for greater engagement between Kamara and the party leadership.
Hon. Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, for instance, has argued that the party’s future would be negatively affected without Kamara’s involvement, saying that “a future without Samura Kamara will not look good for the APC.”
The latest call comes as the APC continues to navigate questions surrounding its leadership and electoral strategy, with the party’s approach to 2028 expected to remain a subject of internal debate.
For Koroma, however, the priority is to bring key figures to the table and strengthen unity ahead of what is likely to be a closely watched electoral contest.
