Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health has welcomed a significant milestone in national healthcare delivery following the award of full five-year accreditation for postgraduate Radiology training to the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC).
The accreditation, granted by the West African College of Physicians (WACP), covers both Specialist and Fellowship levels, enabling medical doctors to undergo advanced diagnostic and clinical imaging training entirely within Sierra Leone.
The addition of Radiology brings the total number of accredited postgraduate medical programmes at USLTHC to nine.
The institution holds accreditation from the WACP, the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), and the Sierra Leone Council for Postgraduate Colleges of Health Sciences across several medical disciplines, including Anaesthesia, Community Health, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery.
Preparations are also underway to secure further regional accreditations in Haematology and Ophthalmology, which would further expand opportunities for specialist medical training within the country.
The Ministry highlighted the expansion of in-country specialist training as an important part of efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. The country has historically relied on overseas institutions for postgraduate medical education, while challenges remain around the retention of health professionals and access to specialised clinical care.
The Ministry congratulated the leadership, faculty, trainees, and partner organisations involved in meeting the accreditation standards, reaffirming its commitment to developing a sustainable and highly skilled health workforce.
