The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) has handed over 15 motorbikes to Maritime Traffic Overseers, Regional Managers and Dispatch Riders as part of efforts to improve mobility and strengthen field operations across the country.
The handover, made on Thursday, September 17, 2026, is expected to enhance the Administration’s ability to conduct maritime monitoring, inspections, stakeholder engagement and reporting, while supporting timely responses, particularly in districts and hard-to-reach communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, SLMA Executive Director Dr. Daniel B. Kaitibi described the motorbikes as operational assets entrusted to officers to enable them to carry out their responsibilities more effectively. He urged beneficiaries to use the assets responsibly and strictly for their intended purposes, while ensuring proper maintenance and accountability.
The intervention is intended to address some of the logistical challenges faced by field personnel in carrying out spot checks and other maritime-related activities in communities across the country.
Ibrahim Sorie Kamara, Regional Manager for Western Area Urban, said the beneficiaries understood the importance of the motorbikes because of the difficulties they encounter in reaching communities without adequate transportation.
He noted that conducting spot checks in hard-to-reach areas can be both costly and challenging, adding that the new motorbikes would help ease some of the operational burdens faced by field officers.
The SLMA said the initiative forms part of its commitment to equipping its field personnel with the necessary resources to effectively deliver on the Administration’s mandate nationwide.
