Freetown Mayor Calls on Global Cities to Turn Commitments Into Action
Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has called on cities around the world to unite, move from commitment to action and lead efforts to address challenges facing communities.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr made the call during the 2026 U20 Mayors Summit in New York, where mayors and city leaders discussed issues including climate resilience, extreme weather, housing and migration.
In a statement shared during the summit, the Freetown mayor highlighted the importance of cities working together to deliver meaningful solutions for residents.
She noted that the second day of the U20 Mayors Summit featured important conversations, new partnerships and a shared determination to turn commitments into action.
Discussions focused on climate resilience, early warning systems and the role of cities in shaping a more inclusive future.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed gratitude for being part of a global community of mayors working together to address challenges and improve the lives of residents.
