11 Sierra Leone Cabinet Ministers Complete Executive Training in New York
Sia Lucy Kannah Eleven Sierra Leone Cabinet Ministers have completed an executive training programme at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York, as part of efforts to strengthen leadership, policy development and public-sector management.
The intensive programme brought together senior government officials to sharpen critical thinking, strengthen problem-solving skills and explore practical approaches to addressing complex governance challenges and improving public service delivery.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, and focused on evidence-based decision-making, policy development and structured approaches to public administration.
The programme was led by professors from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and provided the participating ministers with strategic tools aimed at supporting effective decision-making and implementation of government policies.
The delegation included Minister of Social Welfare Melrose Karminty, Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security Umaru Napoleon Koroma, Minister of Energy Cyril Grant and Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, among other Cabinet Ministers.
Reflecting on the training, Minister Karminty highlighted its relevance to Sierra Leone’s social welfare sector, noting that effective delivery of social protection services requires robust planning, strong coordination among ministries and targeted problem-solving to address the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.
The executive training forms part of the Government’s broader focus on continuous professional development and public-sector reform, with emphasis on strengthening the capacity of senior officials to translate national policies into effective implementation and measurable results for citizens.
The programme also provided an opportunity for Cabinet members to engage with strategic approaches to governance and public service delivery that can be applied across their respective ministries and sectors.
