Sierra Leone, Libya Discuss Peacebuilding, Climate Change And ICJ Candidature
Aaron Parker Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has held discussions with Libya’s Foreign Minister on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
The meeting, held on Monday at Libya House, focused on strengthening the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and Libya, with discussions covering climate change, inclusive peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery.
Minister Swaray shared Sierra Leone’s experience in involving civil society and other stakeholders in the country’s national reconciliation process, while both sides explored lessons that could be relevant to Libya’s ongoing recovery efforts.
The two ministers also discussed the candidature of Professor Dr. Charles Chernor Jalloh for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term.
According to Minister Swaray, Libya expressed support for Professor Jalloh’s candidature, which he welcomed during the meeting.
The discussions further covered the upcoming C-10 meeting, which is scheduled to be hosted by Sierra Leone.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to African solidarity and to working together to advance the Common African Position and shared African priorities in multilateral forums.
The engagement forms part of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic activities during UNGA81, as the country continues to strengthen bilateral partnerships and promote African interests on the international stage.
