Labour Minister, IOM Discuss Measures to Protect Sierra Leonean Migrant Workers
Salamatu Y. Kamara Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has held discussions with the Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on measures to strengthen the protection of Sierra Leonean workers seeking employment abroad.
The engagement took place on Friday, 25 September 2026, in New York, as part of Minister Koroma’s series of high-level engagements focused on labour migration, employment and international cooperation.
Discussions centred on the IOM’s country plan for Sierra Leone and potential areas of support to help the country address both regular and irregular labour migration.
A key focus was the need to strengthen safe and legal migration pathways for Sierra Leoneans, while addressing challenges associated with irregular migration, exploitation and fraudulent recruitment.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Sierra Leonean workers who travel abroad for employment are adequately protected and that labour migration contributes positively to household incomes and national development.
The discussions with IOM form part of Sierra Leone’s broader efforts to strengthen international partnerships around labour migration and improve opportunities and protections for citizens seeking employment outside the country.
Minister Koroma’s engagement with IOM came amid a wider programme of diplomatic and multilateral meetings in New York, where he also participated in discussions on international cooperation, employment and global economic issues.
