The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has received 14 motorbikes and stationery from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Spotlight Initiative to strengthen the operational capacity of its Family Support Unit (FSU).

The items were handed over at Kingtom on Friday, October 2, 2026, as part of efforts to improve the FSU’s ability to respond to cases involving women, children and other vulnerable groups across Sierra Leone.

The motorbikes are expected to enhance the mobility of FSU personnel, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach communities where transportation challenges can delay police response and case follow-up.

The support will particularly assist officers handling cases of gender-based violence, domestic violence, sexual violence and other offences involving vulnerable persons.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, UNDP Gender Analyst Kadiatu Bachalle Taylor said improved mobility was essential to enabling FSU officers to reach communities and respond more effectively to reported cases.

She explained that the motorbikes would allow officers to travel to difficult-to-access areas, follow up on cases and provide support to affected persons more promptly.

UNDP Resident Representative Frederick Ampiah formally presented the items to Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu.

Ampiah reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to working with the Sierra Leone Police to strengthen the protection of vulnerable people and improve access to justice.

He noted that transportation challenges remain an operational constraint for police officers serving communities with difficult road access, making the additional mobility support important to the FSU’s work.

Receiving the donation, IGP Sellu expressed appreciation to UNDP and the Spotlight Initiative for responding to the operational needs of the Family Support Unit.

He said the 14 motorbikes and stationery would enhance the effectiveness of FSU personnel and reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to ensuring that the donated resources are properly utilised to serve communities across the country.

The Inspector-General also commended FSU Head, Detective Superintendent Mohamed S. Y. Mansaray, for his efforts in building partnerships aimed at improving the unit’s service delivery.

The Family Support Unit is responsible for handling cases involving vulnerable persons, and the additional mobility is expected to improve officers’ capacity to reach affected communities, respond to incidents and conduct timely follow-ups.
