Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, has joined President Julius Maada Bio’s post-United Nations General Assembly engagements in advancing international partnerships focused on education, health innovation and research-driven development for Sierra Leone.

Minister Wurie participated in a series of high-level engagements in Boston following the United Nations General Assembly, including meetings with leading academic institutions such as Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The engagements focused on strengthening partnerships with global centres of learning and innovation while aligning international collaboration with Sierra Leone’s national development priorities.

Among the key areas discussed was the ongoing collaboration between Sierra Leone and MIT Professor Hugh Herr on prosthetics and orthotics care. Minister Wurie said the initiative builds on longstanding collaboration associated with the work of Chief Minister Dr David Moinina Sengeh at MIT and is contributing to efforts to improve training, infrastructure and access to assistive technologies for persons with disabilities in Sierra Leone.

Minister Wurie also highlighted discussions with MIT Professor Tavneet Suri on the “Africa 2080” initiative, which is being implemented in partnership with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation.

The initiative seeks to explore a Pan-African online university model aimed at reshaping higher education across the continent. Its initial phase includes entrepreneurship training developed with support from faculty at the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), with plans to expand into areas such as climate change and data science.

During the Boston engagements, Minister Wurie also interacted with students at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she shared her professional journey, including her return to Sierra Leone in 2013, her experience as a multidisciplinary health systems researcher and her transition into public service.

She emphasised the importance of research, interdisciplinary thinking and evidence-based decision-making in developing effective policies and strengthening leadership.

The Minister further participated in engagements involving the Sierra Leone delegation at the Harvard Center for African Studies, as well as a roundtable discussion with members of the Harvard academic community.

The discussions examined opportunities to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new areas of collaboration in support of Sierra Leone’s development agenda.

Minister Wurie said the engagements demonstrated the importance of converting international knowledge and expertise into practical opportunities and local capacity.

She stressed that Sierra Leone’s challenge is not only to establish international partnerships but also to translate those relationships and ideas into institutions, skills and tangible opportunities for citizens.

The engagements form part of broader efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s links with global academic and innovation institutions and advance partnerships in support of national education, health and development priorities.
