Flooding Leaves Gbereh Junction Residents at Risk of Cholera, Displacement
Residents of Gbereh Junction in Port Loko District are facing displacement and public health concerns following heavy rainfall that caused flooding in the community on September 21, 2026.
The situation was highlighted by Councillor Alhaji Sesay of Gbereh Junction during a sitting of the Port Loko District Council, where he reported that at least 15 houses had been damaged, leaving more than 100 residents displaced.
Councillor Sesay further reported that several water wells in the community had been submerged by floodwater. He expressed concern that contamination of the wells could expose residents to cholera and other waterborne diseases.
The Councillor also noted that Gbereh Junction currently lacks a functional water supply system, making access to safe drinking water an additional challenge for residents affected by the flooding.
Responding to the concerns, Deputy Chief Administrator Mohamed Mansaray said the Council would engage relevant partners through the District Disaster Management Committee to explore possible interventions, particularly in addressing public health concerns associated with potentially contaminated water sources.
The September 21 rainfall resulted in significant flooding around Gbereh Junction, affecting households and displacing residents, including women and children. Affected families are appealing to the central government, Port Loko District Council, humanitarian organisations and other development partners for assistance as they continue to cope with the effects of the flooding.
The situation has renewed attention on the need for safe water, sanitation, emergency shelter and other forms of support for communities vulnerable to flooding in the district.
