Some citizens in Sierra Leone have called on President Julius Maada Bio to reduce the cost of fuel, saying high fuel prices are putting additional pressure on their livelihoods and the cost of transportation.

Speaking during a vox pop conducted by Sierraeye on the topic, “If you had just one minute to meet the President, what would you tell him?”, a female trader appealed to the President to take action to reduce fuel prices.

“For me, as a woman and trader, I want to plead with Maada Bio, the President, to reduce the cost of fuel,” she said. “We are struggling with transport fares to buy items at Dove Cut Market.”

A commercial motorbike rider also raised concerns about the cost of fuel and appealed to President Bio to take steps to reduce the cost of living.

He said many Sierra Leoneans were struggling to cope with rising living expenses and urged the government to consider measures that could ease the economic pressure on households.

The responses from the vox pop highlight concerns among some citizens about the impact of rising transportation and living costs on their daily lives.

Sierra Leone’s inflation rate rose from 14.89 per cent in July to 15.66 per cent in August, according to Statistics Sierra Leone.

The rise in inflation has been associated with several factors, including higher housing and utility costs, increased transportation costs and rising global energy prices.

For traders and transport operators, changes in fuel prices can have a direct impact on transportation costs and the prices of goods, potentially adding to the financial pressures faced by households.
