The National Sports Authority (NSA) has commended the Sierra Leone Boxing Association (SLBA) for its recent efforts to decentralize and expand boxing across the country’s provinces.

As part of its regional development initiative, the SLBA donated modern boxing equipment worth millions of Leones, introduced boxing to selected schools, and organised training sessions for local trainers across the Southern and Eastern regions over the weekend.

The initiative aligns with the NSA’s mandate to develop sports nationwide and promote wider participation among Sierra Leoneans across various sporting disciplines.

Speaking at the official equipment handover ceremony on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Kenema City Field, NSA Eastern Region Regional Director James Kanu welcomed the national delegation and praised the SLBA for its intervention.

“This timely donation is a step in the right direction,” Kanu said, encouraging local boxers to make the most of the resources provided to develop boxing into a more competitive and attractive sport in the region.

Representing SLBA National President Solomon D. Kargbo, SLBA Eastern Region Vice President Abdul Mansaray expressed gratitude to the NSA for its continued support and commended the national executive for prioritising sports development in the provinces.

“This is a huge motivator. Our aim as a region is to produce elite boxers for national and international competitions in the future,” Mansaray said, describing the donation as a historic milestone for boxing in the region.

He urged local athletes to make full use of the new equipment to improve their training and athletic performance.

The event also featured a capacity-building workshop for trainers from the Southern and Eastern regions. The coaches recently completed the International Boxing Coaching and Development Course in Freetown, organised by the SLBA and the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SL), with support from Olympic Solidarity and World Boxing.
