Sierra Leone Secures $6 Million U.S. Investment to Boost Community Healthcare

The United States is investing $6 million in Sierra Leone’s health sector through the Faith and Community Initiative, a programme aimed at bringing essential healthcare services closer to families through stronger links between faith-based health facilities and community health structures.

The initiative will be implemented by World Vision Sierra Leone in coordination with the Ministry of Health, with a focus on strengthening existing national health systems rather than creating parallel structures.

Under the programme, faith-based health facilities will work more closely with community-level health structures to improve access to essential services.

The initiative will focus on several priority health areas, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, and nutrition.

By strengthening connections between healthcare facilities and communities, the programme is expected to make these services more accessible to families, particularly those who may face challenges reaching conventional health facilities.

A key component of the U.S.-supported initiative will be strengthening Sierra Leone’s existing health systems and building the capacity of local institutions.

Rather than maintaining long-term dependence on external implementation, the programme is designed to transition key responsibilities to local institutions over time, supporting greater national ownership and sustainability.

The $6 million investment adds to ongoing cooperation between the United States and Sierra Leone in the health sector, with the Faith and Community Initiative placing community structures and faith-based healthcare providers at the centre of efforts to expand access to essential health services.
