President Julius Maada Bio has inspected the construction of the US$417 million Nant Power Plant at Kissy Dock Yard in Freetown, with project officials assuring him that the 108.4-megawatt facility is on track to begin generating electricity in September 2027.

The multi-fuel Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant, designed to use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), is being developed by TCQ Power and Anergi Group Plc to strengthen Sierra Leone’s electricity generation capacity.

During the inspection on Friday, 16 October 2026, the President received a briefing from Karim Nasser, Chief Executive Officer of the Nant Power Project, formerly known as the Western Area Power Generation Project, on construction progress, safety measures and planned operational facilities.

The project is financed through a US$292 million loan from the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), a US$40 million loan from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), and equity contributions from the developers. Construction began in mid-2024, with Shapoorji Pallonji responsible for engineering and construction, while Siemens Energy is expected to operate the facility upon completion.

Project officials also outlined safety measures, including plans to encase three tanks in sand and concrete. The completed facility will feature administrative offices, a firefighting department, a warehouse, a security control room and other supporting infrastructure to enhance operational safety and protect nearby communities.

President Bio was further informed that Sierra Leoneans had undertaken construction work at the site, alongside the use of internationally sourced equipment and advanced treatment technology.

The President reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to the project’s timely completion, noting its importance in improving electricity supply and supporting economic activities. Once operational, the 108.4 MW plant is expected to provide additional power for households, businesses and national development.
