Sierra Leone’s Fullah Community Holds Annual Fundraising and Cultural Celebration in London
Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh, joined members of the Fullah community in London for a cultural celebration and fundraising event focused on unity and community development.
The Fullah Progressive Union UK & Ireland (FPU UK&I) National Fullah Day and Fundraising Event took place at Royal Regency Hall in East London, bringing together community leaders, dignitaries, families and supporters.
The event celebrated Fullah culture and heritage while providing an opportunity for members of the community to recognize achievements, strengthen social ties and discuss the organization’s future.
Dr. Manyeh attended with his wife, Mrs. Marie Manyeh, and Deputy High Commissioner Mrs. Yvonne King Odigboh. The three were invited to serve as patrons of the occasion.
They also joined other guests in presenting awards to individuals and organizations recognized for their contributions to the community.
The program featured cultural performances, poetry, entertainment, networking and formal addresses from FPU UK&I officials. Opening prayers and a traditional welcome ceremony preceded the introduction of the organization’s Executive Committee.
The union’s Vice Chairman and Women’s Leader delivered official remarks, while Treasurer Habib Jalloh outlined the organization’s vision, achievements, community activities and future objectives.
Poetry also featured prominently, including a presentation titled “From the Niger to the Nile: Pulaaku.” The performance explored aspects of Fulɓe heritage and the values associated with Pulaaku, including patience, dignity, respect and wisdom.
The presentation also highlighted the importance of preserving the Fulfulde language and transmitting Fullah cultural values and traditions to younger generations.
Hajah Khadijatu Jabbie-Jalloh delivered the guest-of-honor address, while Sheikh Mahmud Jalloh spoke on unity and prosperity.
A goodwill message from Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, was delivered on his behalf by Hon. Mohamed Haji-Kella, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs.
The message stressed the importance of community cohesion and encouraged members to contribute to peace and progress in Sierra Leone and abroad.
The gathering also marked a leadership transition within FPU UK&I with the inauguration of Chairman Tijan Jalloh by the Electoral Commissioner and outgoing Chairman Alhajie Mohamed Jalloh.
Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Bah subsequently delivered his official address.
Traditional clothing added to the cultural character of the event, with attendees wearing a range of Fullah garments, headwear and accessories that reflected the community’s cultural identity.
The program was jointly hosted by Mr. Mohamed Sadiku Dabo and Mrs. Salma Barrie.
Entertainment followed the formal proceedings, with performances by Marraine Diana Sidime, Firewoodz and Fulabee, alongside music from DJ King.
The event was held under FPU UK&I’s motto, “Fottal e Pottal — Together in Unity and Progress.”
The Sierra Leone High Commission had earlier said the September 19 event would celebrate Fullah culture, heritage and identity while bringing communities together and raising funds for future development initiatives.
The celebration reflected FPU UK&I’s stated focus on maintaining cultural heritage, strengthening community relationships and supporting development while living within a diverse society in the United Kingdom.
