Sierra Leone’s Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, has announced the successful evacuation of Sierra Leonean nationals from war-torn Sudan.

The embassy had earlier issued a press release on 24th April 2023, highlighting the plight of Sierra Leoneans, most of whom were students, fleeing the conflict in Sudan. The intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces forced them to leave the country.

In a recent press release dated 27th April 2023, the embassy stated that it had established constant communication with the Sierra Leoneans to provide emergency support. This support included emergency evacuation from Port Sudan, where they were transported to Wadi Halfa, another city in Sudan close to the Egyptian border. From there, the embassy delegation received them and transported them to Cairo for immediate repatriation to Sierra Leone.

“This support includes emergency evacuation from Port Sudan where they will be transported to Wadi Halfa; another city in Sudan close to the Egyptian border and then to Arquin inside the Egyptian territory, where the Embassy delegation will receive them and transport them to Cairo for immediate repatriation to Sierra Leone,” the embassy stated.

The embassy reiterated its commitment to providing all necessary support for the safety and security of Sierra Leoneans in Sudan and ensuring that they were all repatriated to Sierra Leone to join their families.

The successful evacuation of Sierra Leonean nationals from Sudan has brought relief to their families and loved ones. The embassy’s efforts in providing emergency support and facilitating their safe return home are commendable. The swift action taken by the embassy has once again highlighted the importance of diplomatic missions in ensuring the safety and security of their citizens abroad.
