Seven Chinese nationals and two Sierra Leoneans with military backgrounds are set to appear in a Harare court on Tuesday following the discovery of a gold smuggling operation and a related conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
According to law enforcement sources in Zimbabwe, the events unfolded when one group of Chinese nationals was intercepted near Nyabira with 5kg of gold, allegedly intended for smuggling into Zambia.
Further investigations revealed a plot involving a second group of Chinese nationals and the two Sierra Leoneans. This group, arrested in Karoi, was allegedly planning to rob the first group of their gold.
During the arrests, one of the Sierra Leoneans involved in the would-be robbery was shot in the leg, and firearms were recovered from the scene.
The involvement of Sierra Leonean nationals in this international incident raises concerns and highlights the need for continued vigilance regarding cross-border crime.
