Yetunde Oni, the first female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, has been appointed as the new CEO of Union Bank after regulatory shakeup.

In a swift move, the Central Bank of Nigeria dissolved the boards and managements of Union Bank of Nigeria, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank on January 10th, 2024, citing alleged corporate governance infractions and non-compliance with regulatory requirements. The financial regulatory body wasted no time appointing new executive directors to oversee the affairs of these deposit money banks.

Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Hakama, announced the immediate appointment of Yetunde Oni as the Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank. Oni, the first female CEO of the Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, brings over 25 years of banking industry experience to her new role, succeeding Mudassir Amray.

Career Beginnings: She initiated her career with Prime Merchant Bank in the Treasury & Money Markets Group.

Ecobank Nigeria: Oni joined Ecobank Nigeria in 1994 as a Relationship Manager in the Institutional Banking Group, contributing until 2005.

Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria: Joining Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria in January 2005, Oni assumed the role of Senior Account Relationship Manager in the Local Corporations segment.

Apapa Branch Leadership: Later, she was transferred to the Apapa Branch, where she took on the roles of Wholesale Banking Branch Head and developed the Bank’s Local corporate portfolio in the Apapa and Ogun State Region.
