Makeni Regional Hospital Marks Leadership Transition After Four-Year Tenure
Makeni Regional Hospital has marked a leadership transition following the departure of its Medical Superintendent, with hospital management highlighting service expansion, infrastructure development and reported improvements in healthcare delivery during his four-year tenure.
Hospital management and staff on Monday held a farewell ceremony for outgoing Medical Superintendent Dr Joseph Kamanda Sesay, who served in the position from January 2022 to September 2026.
According to hospital officials, Dr Sesay’s tenure focused on strengthening clinical services, improving internal systems and expanding partnerships supporting healthcare delivery in the Northern Region.
Officials described Dr Sesay as both the youngest and longest-serving Medical Superintendent in the hospital’s history. They also said he was the first specialist general surgeon and public health specialist to hold the position.
Hospital management said internal records presented during the ceremony showed that maternal deaths declined from 37 annually in 2022 to eight in 2025, while annual patient attendance increased from about 14,000 in 2022 to more than 31,000 during the same period.
The figures were based on hospital data presented at the ceremony and were not independently verified.
Management also reported that the hospital laboratory secured a four-year accreditation from the Kenya National Accreditation Service (KENAS), describing it as one of only two accredited laboratories in Sierra Leone. The claim was based on information presented by hospital management during the event.
Several infrastructure and service-development projects were also highlighted, including the establishment of a regional transfusion centre, installation of a 580 KVA solar power system, commissioning of an AIDS Healthcare Foundation clinic, installation of an oxygen plant and paving of the hospital compound.
Officials said the projects were implemented through government support and partnerships with development organisations.
Dr Sesay is expected to take up a new assignment as District Medical Officer in Bonthe District, according to health authorities.
Dr Francis Abu Bayor has been appointed Acting Medical Superintendent of Makeni Regional Hospital pending the appointment of a substantive Medical Superintendent.
Health officials and hospital management expressed appreciation for Dr Sesay’s service, while noting that the leadership transition comes as efforts continue to strengthen management, infrastructure and healthcare delivery at regional hospitals.
