Sierra Leone nurses are gaining new skills in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through a new training programme introduced by the 27th batch of the Chinese Medical Team in the country.
The programme started at the Telemedicine Center of the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Freetown, with more than 40 nurses taking part in the first session.
The training combines online lessons from medical experts in China with practical sessions led by members of the Chinese Medical Team in Sierra Leone. It is designed to help healthcare workers improve their knowledge and provide better support to patients, especially those suffering from long-term pain.
During the training, participants learned about different treatment methods, including Fu’s Subcutaneous Needling therapy, Gua Sha, cupping, moxibustion, and massage techniques.
Trainers also focused on the importance of using safe and standard methods when providing care to patients.
One of the participants, State Registered Nurse Zainab Bangura, said the training provides practical knowledge that can help nurses respond better to everyday healthcare challenges.
The Chinese Medical Team said it will continue organizing more TCM training programmes through the Telemedicine Center to support the development of nursing skills and improve pain management services in Sierra Leone.
