On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, the declaration of rights for the paramount chieftaincy position in Bumpe Perri Chiefdom was successfully concluded at Bumpe Town Baray, leaving nine candidates from various ruling houses in the race for leadership
The historic event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including representatives from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), civil society activists, non-state actors, members of the media, and several prominent stakeholders from the Pujehun area. Each of those parties acknowledged the significance of the chieftaincy in the region’s governance and cultural preservation.
Though the Provincial Secretary for the Southern region was absent, Provincial Secretary for the Northern region, Andrew Fofanah, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of the Local Council Act, which he stated supersedes all local paramount chieftaincy activities.
“The Local Council Act provides a framework for transparent governance, ensuring that the selection process remains fair and conducive to community interests,” Fofanah asserted, clarifying the guidelines governing local council operations.
The nine candidates who successfully secured boxes for the chieftaincy election, a critical step in the selection process, were: Alhaji Moses Musa Jakema, Mustapha Dabeni, Musa Kpakra, Kadie Koroma, Vicent Maada Mowai Kamara Koroma, Bobor Muniru Jakema, Mohamed Jakema, Jaiah Tiwo Gogra, and Alfred Kemokai
With anticipation, the community of Bumpe Perri is now set to select its next leader from those elected candidates. Each candidate reveals a unique background and vision, reflecting the rich heritage of the chiefdom. Community members expressed excitement about the prospects for renewed leadership and potential development in the area.
The ECSL assured that the election process would involve not only voting but also an engagement of community stakeholders to ensure that the voice of the people is heard. According to the Provincial Secretary, the election for the paramount chief of Bumpe Perri Chiefdom is scheduled for the 26 March , 2025.
As the chiefdom prepares for the forthcoming election, the community expressed hope that the next paramount chief would prioritize unity, progress, and sustainable development, addressing the needs of all residents.
