The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning has handed over a suspect to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the theft of more than US$20,000 from its headquarters.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Ansumana M. Dabeni, was apprehended by Ministry staff after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured him stealing a bag belonging to an Egyptian national at the Ministry’s reception on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

According to Ministry officials, the theft was discovered after Dabeni had already left the premises. A subsequent review of security footage enabled staff to identify him as the perpetrator. He was later located, detained by Ministry personnel, and transferred to police custody.

The Ministry has confirmed that Dabeni has admitted to the offence during preliminary questioning but has refused to cooperate in the recovery of the stolen funds. He remains arrested and is being held at the CID as investigations continue.

In a statement, the Ministry commended its staff for their vigilance and prompt response to the incident, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the security and safety of all visitors and personnel at its offices.
