The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is exploring a potential partnership with Egyptian engineering company METIPRO as part of efforts to modernise Sierra Leone’s water infrastructure and expand access to safe and reliable water services across the country.
The discussions took place during a meeting in Freetown, where the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with credible private sector partners to address the country’s growing water needs through innovative technologies and sustainable investment.
Dr. Macarthy said the Government is particularly interested in long-term solutions that can strengthen water security, highlighting seawater desalination as a viable option for improving water supply in the Western Area. She also underscored the strategic importance of the Rokel River Basin, describing it as a key resource for future water development initiatives.
Representatives of METIPRO outlined the company’s extensive global experience, noting that it has successfully delivered more than 5,000 engineering projects across over 50 countries. The company expressed its readiness to support Sierra Leone by providing technical expertise free of charge while collaborating with the Government to identify priority infrastructure projects and suitable financing mechanisms, including Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
Both parties agreed to continue engagements through a structured roadmap aimed at assessing potential areas of collaboration. As part of the next phase, a Sierra Leonean delegation is expected to visit METIPRO’s facilities in Egypt to evaluate the company’s operations and technical capabilities before any formal agreement is reached.
The Minister stressed that while the Government welcomes investment opportunities that can improve the country’s water infrastructure, any future partnership will be subject to rigorous assessment.
“The Government will undertake comprehensive due diligence before entering any formal partnership,” Dr. Macarthy stated, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring that all agreements serve the best interests of the country.
