The Sierra Leone Ex-Servicemen Association has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peacebuilding and national cohesion efforts in Sierra Leone following a visit to the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC).

The commitment was highlighted on Friday, October 30, when a delegation from the Association visited the Commission’s headquarters at OAU Drive, Tower Hill, Freetown, as part of activities marking the 2026 Poppy Week.

During the visit, the Association honoured ICPNC Executive Secretary, Madam Hawa Sally Samai, with the Remembrance Poppy ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11.

Leading the delegation, the Association’s Public Relations Officer, Major (Rtd) Clarence Mark Sesay, explained that the red poppy represents sacrifice, remembrance and hope, in honour of servicemen and women who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, as well as subsequent peacekeeping missions.

He emphasised that ex-servicemen remain important partners in promoting peace and national unity, reaffirming the Association’s willingness to collaborate with the Commission in advancing these objectives.

Receiving the decoration, Madam Samai expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that the poppy serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by men and women in preserving peace.

She also reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with ex-servicemen to strengthen national unity, peace and social cohesion across the country.
