Complaint Calls for Investigation Into Alleged Public Humiliation of Man in Bumbuna
A formal complaint has been raised over the alleged assault, stripping and public parading of a man identified as David Koroma by a group of youths in Bumbuna, Dansogoia Chiefdom.
The complaint, issued by Sulaiman Daffae, calls on the Sierra Leone Police, human rights organisations and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
According to the complaint, the youths allegedly accused Koroma of stealing NLe 50,000 from a shop owner in the community. Following the accusation, the youths reportedly tied him up, stripped him naked and paraded him before traders and commercial motorbike riders in Bumbuna.
Daffae said that if the allegations are confirmed, the reported treatment would constitute a serious violation of Koroma’s dignity and fundamental rights.
The complaint stressed that allegations of theft should be addressed through lawful procedures and that no person should be subjected to mob justice, public humiliation or degrading treatment regardless of the offence they are accused of committing.
Daffae called on the Sierra Leone Police and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
Human rights organisations were also urged to intervene, document the alleged abuse and provide any necessary protection and support to Koroma.
The complaint further appealed to community leaders and stakeholders in Bumbuna to discourage mob justice and promote lawful mechanisms for resolving disputes and allegations of criminal conduct.
Daffae also urged members of the media and social media users to exercise restraint by refraining from sharing or circulating images and videos allegedly showing Koroma in a state of humiliation.
According to the complaint, circulating such materials could further undermine his dignity and expose him to additional public shame and potential psychological harm.
The complaint emphasised that the allegations require independent investigation and verification, while calling on the authorities to treat the matter with urgency.
