Thousands in Kambia District’s fishing island communities are facing a humanitarian crisis due to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources’ one-month fishing ban.

The Ministry’s unfulfilled promises have left these communities in severe hunger and despair.

Residents of Yeliboya Island, Kortimor Island, Mahable Island, Makompa, Sasiyek, Mayorow, Makuma, Rokai, and other fishing-reliant areas have been abandoned. Many boat owners have fled to Guinea for survival, while those remaining are battling starvation without support.

The crisis has also disrupted education, as parents take their children to Guinea in search of food, leaving classrooms empty and futures uncertain.

The District Civil Society Movement, media, Paramount Chiefs, and stakeholders are calling for immediate government intervention. The plight of these communities demands urgent action to prevent further suffering and potential loss of life.
