Magburaka Residents Slam Tonkolili District Council Over Uncollected Garbage
Richmond B. Tholley Residents of Magburaka in Tonkolili District have raised concerns over the failure of the Tonkolili District Council to collect garbage, leaving large piles of waste across the township.
The uncollected waste, particularly in key areas such as the market and Magbass parking ground, has attracted flies, mosquitoes, and rodents, raising fears of outbreaks of diseases like cholera, malaria, and typhoid.
Several residents expressed frustration, noting that despite paying local taxes and dues, they continue to live in unsanitary conditions. “We are paying our taxes, but the environment is getting worse. The piles of dirt are making life unbearable,” one trader at the Magburaka market told reporters.
Community members are now calling on the council to urgently deploy waste collection teams to clear the garbage backlog and establish a more reliable waste management system. They argue that Magburaka’s position as the administrative and commercial hub of Tonkolili makes proper sanitation a necessity.
At the time of reporting, the Tonkolili District Council had not responded to requests for comment.
