A magistrate court in Freetown has sentenced a 44-year-old man to five years in prison after he was convicted of stealing US$6,800 belonging to Mohamed Gabriel Conteh.
The incident occurred on January 31, 2026, in the Regent Village area of Freetown, according to evidence presented in court. The stolen money was valued at approximately NLe161,160.
The accused pleaded not guilty to charges of larceny under Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916 and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The case was heard before Magistrate John Manso Fornah at Pademba Road Court No. 2.
During the proceedings, prosecution witness Mohamed Kabbie Conteh testified that he was attacked with a cutlass, stone and stick before the accused allegedly took his bag containing the cash and a Samsung Galaxy S21 mobile phone.
The witness told the court that he sustained injuries during the incident and subsequently sought medical treatment at Connaught Hospital.
Following the proceedings, the court handed down a five-year prison sentence to the accused after finding him guilty of the offences.
