NPHA Conducts Health Preparedness Assessment at Freetown International Airport
The National Public Health Agency (NPHA) has conducted a technical monitoring and needs assessment visit to Freetown International Airport (FIA) as part of efforts to strengthen public health surveillance, screening and emergency preparedness at the country’s main international airport.
The visit, held on Friday, 30th October 2026, at the airport in Lungi, focused on assessing Port Health operations, reviewing the implementation of the Sierra Leone Health Travel Portal and engaging key airport stakeholders on measures to improve border health security.

During the assessment, the NPHA team examined existing operational arrangements, identified potential gaps and discussed areas requiring improvement to ensure effective public health screening and preparedness at the point of entry.
The engagement also provided an opportunity to strengthen coordination with airport stakeholders and assess the systems in place to detect, monitor and respond to potential public health threats.

The initiative forms part of the Agency’s ongoing efforts to enhance health surveillance at points of entry, improve preparedness and safeguard the health of travellers and the wider population.
Through these interventions, the NPHA continues to prioritise stronger border health security, effective disease surveillance and the protection of lives.
