SEND Sierra Leone and the Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD) have called for urgent Government action to address challenges affecting the Makeni–Kamakwie road corridor, describing the route as a critical lifeline for communities, livelihoods, healthcare, trade and local economic development.
In their latest position paper, the organisations raised concerns over stalled road construction, the collapse of the Mathehun Bridge, disrupted ferry services and the deteriorating condition of bypass roads along the corridor.
According to the organisations, the infrastructure challenges are affecting the movement of people and goods, increasing transportation costs and disrupting livelihoods. They also warned that the situation is creating serious difficulties for residents seeking emergency healthcare.
SEND Sierra Leone and NMJD are calling for the release of funds for ongoing road projects and the resolution of contractual bottlenecks that they say are contributing to delays in construction.
They further called for the permanent reconstruction of the Mathehun Bridge, restoration of critical ferry services and regular maintenance of emergency bypasses to ensure communities remain accessible.
The organisations also urged authorities to improve transparency and public information on the implementation and progress of projects along the corridor.
“Our message is clear: Release the funds. Resolve the contracts. Reconstruct Mathehun Bridge. Restore the ferries. Protect emergency access. And keep citizens informed,” the organisations stated.
They said urgent and accountable intervention is needed to restore reliable transport links and protect the economic and social activities that depend on the Makeni–Kamakwie corridor.
