At a meeting in Mamaila Gbla village, Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom, in the Northern District of Tonkolili, grassroot supporters and members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party in Constituency 49 have vowed to re-elect the party’s current Tonkolili District Chairman.

Attended by a mammoth crowd of SLPP members and supporters from Constituency 49 three Chiefdoms of Kholifa Mabang, Kholifa Mamunta Mayossoh and Malal, the meeting took place on the 20th January 2025.

Sallu Kargbo, Constituency 49 SLPP Chairman, said in his opening remarks that they as a Constituency are pleased with Ahmed Saybom Kanu’s leadership and will re-elect him to continue with his development trajectories across the District. Kargbo described the SLPP Chairman as a force to reckon with and a man of his words. Saybom Kanu’s leadership, Constituency 49 Chairman said had proven to be serious in handling issues affecting the grassroots.

“Therefore, we in the three Chiefdoms of Constituency 49 will ensure he is re-elected as the District Chairman of Tonkolili,” Kargbo said.

The Sierra Leone People’s Party will soon begin its lower level elections that will usher in new executives and leadership at zonal, Chiefdom and Constituency levels, according to a public notice from the party’s Secretariat. The elected officials will later democratically decide who should be at the helm of affairs of the party at District level.

Ahmed Saybom Kanu, the party’s current Tonkolili District Chairman is seeking a second term in what many political pundits consider a political smooth ride.

Kanu’s endorsement by the leadership of Constituency 49 has manifested he’s ahead of other opponents vying for the position.

During the meeting, SLPP Constituency 49 entire Executive which comprises the four key positions that’s the Chairman, Secretary General , Women’s and Young Generation Leaders were in attendance signifying the importance of the gathering which aim was to strategize how they will secure a win for Kanu in the next District election.

The Chiefdom and Ward Executives were also present at Mamaila Gbla during the meeting.

Among the speakers was Hassan Tanka Koroma, the Young Generation Leader of the Constituency who doubles as the Kholifa Mamunta Mayossoh Chiefdom Youth Chairman. Tanka pledged his unflinching support to Kanu and urged others to ensure he’s re-elected.

The rationale behind the re-election of Kanu as Tonkolili District Chairman of the SLPP is to ensure he continues to unify the party and prepare it to be a formidable side ahead of future general elections, according to scores of party supporters who spoke during the meeting.

The Chairman of Constituency 49 called on the leadership of the other Constituencies to do the same for the general benefit of the party membership. Singing of traditional songs that signify loyalty to Saybom Kanu climaxed the historic and colourful occasion.
