Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) Bombali as part of its humanitarian work together with GOAL-SL have donated thirty-eight units of blood to the regional hospital blood bank in Makeni.

Speaking to NewsFeed Sierra Leone Mohamed Sesay the Acting Branch Manager for the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) in Bombali asserted that the donation was prompted as a result of the dire need for blood by pregnant women and lactating mothers which was brought to their notice during a partners meeting organised by DHMT Bombali.

He added that donating to the blood bank at the regional hospital in Makama Makeni, has been a normal routine of the Bombali branch with over five hundred volunteers, however, those that have attained the age of eighteen years are reliable to donate including blood screening of the volunteers before the process.

Sesay concludes that the availability of blood at hospitals in Sierra Leone has been a challenge and on that backdrop, Red Cross intervene to salvage the situation and therefore encouraged Sierra Leoneans to support the initiative “I want to allay the fears of the general public that Red Cross does not sell blood and we have structure at the hospital to ensure that every person that is in dire need for blood benefits from the donation made by our volunteers” he asserted.
