The Minister of Information and Civic Education has disclosed that the Sierra Leonean government has made two unsuccessful attempts to extradite political activist and social media commentator, Adebayor, from the Netherlands.

The revelation came during the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s (MOIC) weekly press briefing.

The Minister explained that Sierra Leone had previously sought Adebayor’s extradition due to his alleged role in orchestrating unrest in the country. However, despite the government’s formal requests, diplomatic efforts to secure his return have not been successful.

Drawing a parallel to a current case involving the Dutch government, the Minister referenced the extradition request for Jos Leijdekkers, a Dutch national wanted by the Netherlands. He noted that while the Dutch government has been publicly engaging on the matter via social media, Sierra Leone has strictly followed diplomatic protocols in its attempts to secure Adebayor’s extradition.

Speaking on the issue of an extradition request from the Dutch government circulating on social media, the Minister further revealed that early last week, the Sierra Leonean government received an official communication from the Dutch authorities. The request sought a meeting between the Dutch Deputy Head of Mission in Ghana and Sierra Leone’s Attorney General to hand over documents and engage the government regarding the Jos Leijdekkers case. However, the Dutch government did not come as requested, and the minister, who was eagerly waiting, noted that they instead went to Ghana. A delegation was sent there, and a large volume of documents was handed over to them.

According to the Minister, these documents were officially received by the Sierra Leonean government on Sunday and are currently under review by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. The government will determine its next steps after careful legal consideration.
