One of Sierra Leone’s veteran obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Ishmael Beresford Aki-Peters was reported dead in 2023.

According to Dr. Sylvia Blyden, Aki-Peters helped deliver thousands of babies across the country when he was active.

The family said arrangements for his funeral has began.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Sierra Leone has a shortage of medical practitioners and the West African country has one of the highest infant mortalities in the world with close to 10 deaths in every 1,000 deliveries.

The country has made strides recently with a reduction infant mortality rates.

Experts have said that it is expected to nosedive in the coming years if health authorities in the country continue to improve conditions in health facilities and sanitation of communities.
