Tension reportedly arose in Kenema on Thursday after a group allegedly intercepted a vehicle belonging to Kakebu Water Company along Maxwell Khobe Street, resulting in the destruction of several bundles of sachet water and the alleged harassment of the vehicle’s occupants.
According to reports, bundles of water being transported by the company were thrown onto the street and destroyed during the confrontation, while the driver and other occupants of the vehicle were allegedly intimidated by the group involved in the incident.
Sources in the area said the unrest was reportedly triggered by a sudden increase in the price of a bundle of sachet water from Le 8 to Le 10.
Residents and traders claimed the price adjustment was implemented without prior public notice or engagement with police authorities for possible intervention and public sensitisation, leading to dissatisfaction among some community members and water business operators.
The incident reportedly caused temporary tension along Maxwell Khobe Street as residents and passersby gathered at the scene.
