Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Mayor of Freetown and a leading aspirant for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer position, has outlined her vision for strengthening Sierra Leone’s economy.
In a recent discussion on Liberty Online TV interview, Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the importance of both foreign investment and the development of local businesses.
“My number one focus for Sierra Leone is to grow the economy,” Aki-Sawyerr stated, spotlight the role of foreign manufacturing companies in fostering market opportunities within the country.
She further acknowledged that while foreign investments are beneficial, the true potential lies in strengthening local, small, and medium-sized enterprises.
Aki-Sawyerr expressed concern over the implications of foreign companies employing international staff and repatriating profits, stating, “They can have international employees at a high degree, and their intention is to take much of the country’s resources back to their own country, where they also pay tax.”
“Our own objective is for our own enterprises to strengthen the economy,” Aki-Sawyerr affirmed, reiterating that enhancing the local economy is one of her three major focuses if elected as the APC flagbearer and subsequently as president.
