Sierra Leone has been ranked 8th among the top ten safest countries in Africa, with a score of 1.937, according to the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) released by the Institute for Economics & Peace.
Globally, Sierra Leone placed 74th out of 163 countries assessed. The GPI uses 23 indicators across societal safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation to provide a comprehensive measure of peacefulness.
The 2026 report found that global peace continued to decline for the 15th time in the last 18 years, with conflicts in Sudan and other regions contributing to a broader deterioration in global stability. Despite the global trend, several African nations stood out for relative safety, political stability, and low levels of violence.
