Sierra Leone’s Auditor-General Abdul Aziz Elected Vice Chairperson of African Audit Body
Deborah Sorie Sierra Leone’s Auditor-General, Abdul Aziz, has been elected Vice Chairperson of the African Organisation of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E).
The election took place on Tuesday, May 19, during the organization’s 22nd Governing Board Meeting held in Liberia. Aziz was elected alongside Kenya’s Auditor-General, Nancy Gathungu, who was re-elected to continue serving as the board’s Chairperson.
The appointment is seen as a major achievement for Sierra Leone, boosting the country’s influence in international public financial management. In his new role, Aziz will help shape regional audit policies, governance reforms, and professional standards across Africa. The position is also expected to open up new opportunities for Sierra Leone to benefit from technical cooperation and international training.
Since becoming Auditor-General, Aziz has been credited with strengthening the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL). Under his leadership, the agency has expanded its audits, increased engagement with citizens, and pushed for better transparency and service delivery within government institutions.
His election to AFROSAI-E adds to his growing list of international roles. Aziz was recently appointed to the governing board of the African Professionalisation Initiative and the board of the International Consortium on Governmental Financial Management.
Colleagues and international partners view these appointments as a reflection of confidence in his leadership and his commitment to improving public sector accountability across the continent.
