All People’s Congress (APC) Western Rural District Chairman Kashor Holland Cole has strongly rejected claims that President Julius Maada Bio is expected to assent to the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill, questioning whether Parliament has actually passed the legislation in the manner being portrayed.
Cole was responding to claims attributed to Parliamentary Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mambu, who reportedly stated that the President would assent to the amendment bill.
According to Cole, the statement that the bill was passed by “members of Parliament” should not be presented as an established fact without clarity on whether all members of Parliament supported or participated in its passage.
”I don’t believe they have passed that bill. In fact, people should stop saying that they passed that bill in Parliament. I got angry about that. I have not even told the APC about that,” Cole stated.
The APC Western Rural Chairman further maintained that his party would not accept the constitutional amendment if it was not in the interest of the people of Sierra Leone.
He questioned whether President Bio would ultimately assent to the legislation, stressing that Sierra Leone belongs to its citizens and that decisions concerning the country’s constitutional framework should be treated with seriousness.
Cole also challenged the credibility of Mambu’s claims, citing what he described as a previous inaccurate statement concerning the leadership of the Freetown City Council and district councils.
”Treat Mambu like ‘larrayman’ because he doesn’t tell the truth,” Cole said, while acknowledging that Mambu serves as the Parliamentary PRO.
Cole alleged that Mambu had previously claimed that a new Mayor of Freetown had been appointed and even circulated an image which, according to him, appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence.
”He is not reading the laws, so there is no need for him to tell you that the President has signed something and you believe it,” Cole argued.
He described Mambu’s latest claim as a possible ”mind game,” insisting that statements about constitutional amendments should be based on the actual provisions of the law and official actions rather than political speculation.
Cole further claimed that when President Bio later delivered his address, neither the President nor Mambu publicly made the announcement in the manner previously suggested.
The APC official therefore urged Sierra Leoneans to independently verify claims surrounding the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill and not assume that the President has assented to the legislation until there is an official confirmation.
His comments add to the ongoing political debate surrounding the proposed constitutional amendments, with opposition figures continuing to scrutinise the legislative process and the potential implications of any changes to Sierra Leone’s Constitution.
