Senior members of Sierra Leone’s main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), including suspended Chairman Alhaji Osman Foday Yansaneh, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and former opposition Parliamentary Leader Chernor Maju Bah, are travelling to Lungi to welcome former President Ernest Bai Koroma back to the country.
Koroma is returning to Sierra Leone after being accused of treason in connection with the failed coup attempt of August 2023. He denied the allegations and was later allowed to travel to Nigeria on medical grounds.
The Sierra Leonean government dropped the treason charges against the former president in July this year, paving the way for his permanent return.
This will be Koroma’s second visit to Sierra Leone since leaving the country in 2024. His first return was to attend the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Lungi.
His latest return is expected to mark his permanent relocation to Sierra Leone, with the former president expected to continue his retirement in his hometown of Makeni.
Koroma handed over power to President Julius Maada Bio in 2018 after serving two terms in office.
News of his return has been welcomed by supporters of the former president, many of whom have expressed their desire to see him back in Sierra Leone.
The arrival is expected to draw supporters and senior APC figures to Lungi as the former president begins a new chapter of his post-presidential life.
