BBC Media Action and the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) are pushing for major reforms to reshape Sierra Leone’s media landscape, focusing on strengthening public broadcasting and protecting community media.
Through the EU-funded MEDIA Project, the two organisations presented two proposed policy documents to government and media leaders, outlining reforms to strengthen the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) as an independent and financially sustainable public service broadcaster.
The proposals also include a new national policy for community media, intended to protect and empower local voices across the country.
The recommendations were developed following consultations with journalists, civil society, Parliament and other stakeholders, and build on the Tripartite Committee Report.
Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Bockarie Abdel-Aziz Bawoh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a diverse, independent and professional media environment.
He also underscored the importance of community radio in promoting civic engagement and giving communities a platform to participate in national affairs.
The proposed reforms are expected to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable media sector, while strengthening the role of the media in Sierra Leone’s democratic development.
