President Julius Maada Bio has sent a congratulatory message to the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu after his victory at the weekend polls.
“On behalf of the Government & people of Sierra Leone, I wish to congratulate the President-Elect of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, President Bio wrote on his official Twitter account. The Sierra Leone president added that Nigeria has set a “shining example for the region as a beacon of hope in advancing democracy.”
Bio affirmed that his government will be looking forward to working with Nigeria on different levels.
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, won by a narrow margin on the 25th February polls in Africa’s largest democracy. The election is believed to be the most contested in the country’s history.
Some Nigerians at home and abroad have, however, criticised the country’s electoral body INEC for what they believed to be irregularities during the election.
The West African nation will be holding its gubernatorial elections in some states on 11th March 2023.
The United States Department of States has urged INEC to fix the reported glitches before the 11 March elections.
“We join other international observers in urging INEC to improve in the areas that need the most attention ahead of the March 11 gubernatorial elections,” the US Department of State said.
Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s Electoral Commissioner was present in Nigeria during their elections. The country will also hold their multi-tier elections this year on 24 June.
Political pundits also believe that it will be hotly contested as the nation is currently facing inflation.
