President Bio Demands Greater Voice for Developing Countries at UNGA81
President Julius Maada Bio has called for greater participation by developing countries in shaping global rules and decisions on artificial intelligence, climate action and international governance.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Bio said technological advances could expand access to education, healthcare, agriculture and public administration, but warned that unequal access to infrastructure and expertise could deepen existing inequalities.
He called for developing countries to participate directly in setting standards and governing technologies that increasingly affect their populations.
The President also highlighted the impact of climate change on vulnerable coastal communities in Sierra Leone, citing Shenge, a fishing community in Moyamba District, as an example of communities exposed to coastal climate risks.
Bio called for predictable climate financing, increased support for adaptation and faster responses to loss and damage, linking such measures to the protection of vulnerable communities and global stability.
His address also touched on reforms to the United Nations, with Bio supporting efforts to make the organisation more effective and accountable while strengthening its capacity to respond to international crises.
Gender representation in the selection of the next UN Secretary-General also featured in his remarks. Bio noted the historical male dominance of the position and said the next selection process would be an important opportunity to advance gender equality.
Sierra Leone’s efforts to secure greater representation in international institutions were also highlighted, including the country’s candidacy of Professor Charles Chernor Jalloh for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term. Sierra Leone formally presented Jalloh’s candidacy at the United Nations, with the election scheduled for November 2026.
Bio also linked Sierra Leone’s position on international law to its experience following the civil war, noting the role of the United Nations in supporting the country’s peace and post-conflict recovery.
He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to contributing to UN peace operations, supporting mediation and peacebuilding, upholding international law and advocating for the rights of women and girls.
The President further stressed the principle of equality among UN member states, highlighting the General Assembly as a forum where countries have a voice in global affairs.
The remarks came during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, whose General Debate is taking place from 22 to 28 September 2026 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” The session is being presided over by General Assembly President Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.
