A woman believed to be in her 60s has just been charged with manslaughter in southern Sierra Leone following the death of a 21-year-old a day after she’d undergone female circumcision.

Activists say it’s the first time in the country that someone has been brought before a court relating to FGM. Sowo Sandy was sent on remand by the magistrate in Bonthe District in the southern part of Sierra Leone.

The 60 years old woman had being accused to have caused the death of Maseray Sei whom she initiated into the Bondo Society in December last year.

The matter has been adjourned to the 20th July, 2022.
