Minister of Health Dr Austin Demby has praised the health workers who served during the 69th ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit, describing them as “unsung heroes” whose dedication and professionalism contributed significantly to the successful hosting of the regional event in Freetown and Lungi.
Speaking during a certificate presentation ceremony held on Monday, Dr Demby expressed profound appreciation to the Ministry of Health team for their tireless service throughout the summit. He said the recognition received by the health sector would not have been possible without the commitment of the frontline personnel who worked behind the scenes.
The Minister presented certificates of appreciation to 66 health workers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians and ambulance drivers, in recognition of their diligent and professional services during the summit.
“All health workers who served at the ECOWAS Summit are unsung heroes,” Dr Demby stated, noting that their work reflected the ministry’s commitment to quality healthcare delivery and emergency preparedness.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Ministry’s “Hero of the Week” award to Madam Nanah Fofanah, Director of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Programme, in recognition of her team’s outstanding performance during the conference. The IPC team ensured the strict implementation of key infection prevention measures, including handwashing and the use of sanitisers across conference venues.
According to the Ministry of Health, nearly 200 participants with minor health conditions were diagnosed and treated by the medical teams deployed in Freetown and Lungi during the summit.
The ministry further disclosed that public health surveillance mechanisms were activated at major points of entry and conference venues to prevent the possible spread of diseases and ensure the safety of delegates and participants.
Dr Demby said the successful medical response demonstrated Sierra Leone’s growing capacity to host major regional and international events. He commended the teamwork, discipline and professionalism displayed by the health personnel and encouraged them to continue serving with dedication and excellence.
The recognition of the health workers follows President Dr Julius Maada Bio’s recent commendation of the Ministry of Health for its effective leadership, medical preparedness and response during the ECOWAS Summit.
